I Will Gather You From All Nations

Ezekiel 36:24-38 (New International Version)

24 " 'For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land. 25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. 28 You will live in the land I gave your forefathers; you will be my people, and I will be your God. 29 I will save you from all your uncleanness. I will call for the grain and make it plentiful and will not bring famine upon you. 30 I will increase the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field, so that you will no longer suffer disgrace among the nations because of famine. 31 Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices.32 I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign LORD. Be ashamed and disgraced for your conduct, O house of Israel! 33 " 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: On the day I cleanse you from all your sins, I will resettle your towns, and the ruins will be rebuilt. 34 The desolate land will be cultivated instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass through it. 35 They will say, "This land that was laid waste has become like the garden of Eden; the cities that were lying in ruins, desolate and destroyed, are now fortified and inhabited."36 Then the nations around you that remain will know that I the LORD have rebuilt what was destroyed and have replanted what was desolate. I the LORD have spoken, and I will do it.' 37"This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Once again I will yield to the plea of the house of Israel and do this for them: I will make their people as numerous as sheep, 38 as numerous as the flocks for offerings at Jerusalem during her appointed feasts. So will the ruined cities be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the LORD."

Merry Christmas 2012

Christmas 2012

1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.
2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.)
3 And everyone went to their own town to register.

4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.
5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.
6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born,
7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
Chapter 2

There was no room for Him.
Do you have room for him?
Jesus the Christ was born in a manger in Bethlehem of Judea.
Joseph and Mary, who was heavy with child but all the rooms at the inn were taken.

It was such a time as this and God knew exactly what time he wanted His Son to be born.
He knew that there would be a Census and people all over had to go home and be registered in their ancestral home. So Jesus had to be registered as a Jew and as a son of David's house.

In this world we have many rooms for everything that knocks on the door of our heart, or even that which simply barges in.
Will you have room for him today?
People we have given room in our hearts have hurt us, betrayed us, violated us, disrespected us, belittled us, called us names of everything inhuman and immoral, abused us,
yet we still hang on to them.
Yet Jesus is the Prince of Peace, the Early rising Sun, akasana akaberyeberye.
The rock of ages,
He will sweep away the chaff in your life for he is Holy, he is pure, He is gentle,
He is The Way, the truth and the Life.
No one comes to the Father, to God except through Him.

So who holds your heart?
What holds your heart ?
Since we are all travellers in this world, After this journey where will you be?
For Jesus said that, in my Father's house there are many rooms.
Ebyensi eno bisusunku na birerya.
Temusookanga kunoonya bisusunku na birerya, oliba oli awo mangwago nebigwaawo nebibgwaawo.

Mwe musookenga okunoonya bwakabaka bwa Katonda.
Tebugwaawo, Tebugwaawo.

O Night Divine.
O Holy Night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining.
Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was born;
O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!
O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!

Consultative Council gets challenging welcome from New Zealanders

Consultative Council gets challenging welcome from New Zealanders

Young New Zealanders challenged theAnglican Consultative Council before the members even set foot in the doors of the Telstra Event Center Oct. 27 (local time) when three young Maori Anglican men, hefting taiahas (spears), performed a series of stances, shouts and facial gestures meant to determine if the newcomers had come with ill intent.

Kahutia Maxwell, center, prepares to lay down a leafy branch in front of Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams to test his reaction during the wero (challenge) part of the powhiri to welcome the Anglican Consultative Council to Auckland. ENS photo/Mary Frances Schjonberg
As part of the wero (challenge), Kahutia Maxwell, one of the three, laid down a leafy branch in the space between him and his fellows, and the assembled council members. When Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams solemnly picked up the branch, it was clear that the council meant no harm so Maxwell, along with Cyprus Morunga and Pouoterangi Ngargopo, escorted the council members into the arena.

Husbands and Wives as God's Created Partners

Pastor Joseph Prince is also teaching about a man and a woman as God created them and their meaning in Hebrew. Very interesting. Very revealing. Very powerful. However, TBN calls them 2006 Classics.

Marriage is a sacrifice to one another as well. Our house, our property, our children, etc.

 Ephesians 5:22-33
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
(Ephesians 5:22-33 ESV)

Since we are in the fallen world, submission of this world may mean something very different from what God intended. Ebiseera bingi Abaami bagamba, "mbu Omukazi tampulira" What do they mean? Is it what God intended? Obufumbo bungi ennaku zino bufuuse bwa nfunamu ki! Nze nfunira wa? Oluusi owulira Abakyal nga bagamba nti, "Omusajja simusobola!!!" Mu ngeri ki? How does sexual gratification differ from sexual lust or orgies? Deep questions that need careful pondering so as to have a fulfilling marriage. Marriage is not an experiment. it is a full commitment. Without God, without Jesus, without the Holy Spirit in the marriage, there is FIRE only. It is in demonstrated in Hebrew and it is true.

Man and woman as a couple in marriage means power. Not imbalanced power though, but equal yet different power.

Prayer for God to Prop Us Up On Leaning Side

It is my prayer that God props me up on my leaning side. Just heard it from Pastor Jentezen Franklin as he preached that someone in his church always ended prayed with that. The man lived out in the country and one time saw his old barn leaning after weathering so many storms, hurricanes, winds, heat, you name it. So he propped it up.

It is my prayer that God may prop you up on your leaning side.

Once we have weathered many storms, many winds, many hurricanes, heat, and floods in our lives, we become so worn down emotionally, mentally, socially, physically, financially and spiritually. We may think of even quitting! We may even think of abandoning our Loving and Gracious God! We may start leaning back towards sin yet not even see it yet others may see it. We may start leaning back in secret towards sin and in private behind closed doors especially in our homes! Our prayer should be to ask God to prop us up on our leaning side.

We may lean towards sexual sin, towards anger, towards stealing, towards cheating, towards hate, towards selfishness, towards untruthfulness, towards deceiving others, towards infidelity, towards losing faith and hope in God, towards apostasy, falling away from God, and so many others. Our prayer should be always to ask God to prop us up on our leaning side. We all have a leaning side. If its not in one then the other at any given time.

Caring for the Poor is Government's Biblical Role - Jim Wallis | God's Politics Blog | Sojourners

Caring for the Poor is Government's Biblical Role - Jim Wallis | God's Politics Blog | Sojourners

Therefore we should have no homeless people anywhere in the world, especially in these "so called developed countries". Are they really developed wholistic? Pyhsically, socially, culturally, politically, mentally, emotionally, financially, economically and spiritually? Or are they wanting in some or other?

On the other hand, I heard Rev. Billy Graham, great Evangelist when he was in MA in 1982, say that a pastor of a certain church told him that if everybody tithed, gave a tenth of all their income, and perhaps harvest, that they would have $10, 000,000. So Billy Graham asked him when he would invite him to preach for a day and get some of that collection. Laughter was heard as I laughed myself. It is also true that if all of us return to God what he gives of us as He commands us in Malacki 3:6-10, 11-15, we would not have so many poor in our communities and churches. So have we skewed God's principles? Are we so much more into giving places and recognition to those whom we perceive to be greater than others? To those who give more than others, irrespective of how they gotten that money? Are these many male led churches recognising these many poor, marginalised, disadvantaged and hurting women who come to these churches? These women who make up 85% of their congregations? By the way, who props up these churches?

Big question: Why aren't many men going to these Churches? Is it because of the leaning messages? Is it because of the half Gospel preached and practised in these Churches? Is it because of power and authority issues in these Churches?

So what is the secret of those Churches where there are as many men as women? What attracts them? What keeps them there?

Rev. Jessica Nakawombe

What is the deep, beyond the surface problem where there are few men and may women? is it because women are so tolerant? Is it because they don't have elsewhere to go?

Medical Mission Sisters Long Road To Freedom Lyrics

Medical Mission Sisters Long Road To Freedom Lyrics

Chorus
It's a long road to freedom, a winding steep and high.
But when you walk in love with the wind on your wing
And cover the earth with the songs you sing,
The miles fly by.

1. I walked one morning by the sea,
And all the waves reached out to me.
I took their tears, then let them be.

2. I walked one morning at the dawn,
When bits of night still lingered on.
I sought my star, but it was gone.

3. I walked one morning with a friend,
And prayed the day would never end.
The years have flown so why pretend.

4. I walked one morning with my King,
And all my winters turned to spring.
Yet every moment held its sting.

Precious Lord, Take My Hand By Thomas A. Dorsey

http://biblicalfocus.com/Hymn_Precious_Lord.html

Precious Lord, Take My Hand.
                                                         By Thomas A. Dorsey

Precious Lord, take my hand,
Lead me on, let me stand,
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;
Through the storm, through the night,
Lead me on to the light:
Refrain
Take my hand, precious Lord,
Lead me home.
When my way grows drear,
Precious Lord, linger near,
When my life is almost gone,
Hear my cry, hear my call,
Hold my hand lest I fall:
Refrain
When the darkness appears
And the night draws near,
And the day is past and gone,
At the river I stand,
Guide my feet, hold my hand:
Thomas A. Dorsey, often called the Father of Gospel Music (1899 - 1993), wrote this song in Chicago, Illinois, after his wife Nettie died while giving birth to a child (who also died shortly thereafter). Dorsey sang the song for his friend, Gospel singer Theodore Frye, and Frye’s choir sang it the next Sunday at the Ebenezer Baptist Church. Dorsey died of Alzheimer's disease on January 23, 1993. But his testimony lives on each Sunday as voices rise in praise, singing the gospel across the land

Wait and Get Instructions for your Life Daily

As I was praying and listening to God this morning, I was reminded by Him to listen to His instructions for my life daily. I was so concerned by the many things I had to do and accomplish just today. It was so overwhelming for me. Not only that, I was just recovering from two weeks of flu, or pneumonia or bronchial pneumonia. It is amazing how we plan our days and without God. It is so overwhelming. Many times we achieve what we want, but we don't go anywhere, and we come back to the same point even after 10, 20, 30 years or more! Other times we don't even achieve what we planned t do 10, 20, 30, 40 years or even a lifetime!
Jesus said,"Ask and you shall receive, knock and it shall be opened for you,.."
"You receive not because you ask not..." Our Father in heaven, our Creator, Genesis 1:26-28, since we are made in His likeness who breathed our spirit in us, is always on standby to give us daily instructions. God is so diplomatic for He cannot force Himself on us. Yet we are always running here and there, asking every creation be it human nor non human for our daily instructions! For the instructions of our lives. Those of us who have been to school, we receive daily instructions from our Teachers and instructors, and we follow then like a gospel or gospel truth. Yet they don't know it all! At times they lead us on wrong paths or directions in our lives.

Many of us, if not most of us, we ask for and follow our bosses, or employers directions like the bible! Yet we ignore our Master Planner, God, our heavenly Father! Many of us we don't have time for Him. We are always postponing just to even say Hi, or Hello when the day has just began. Yet we acknowledge and say Hi or hello or Good Morning to people we meet on our way and sometimes those we live with! Can you imagine how Our Master Planner, is disappointed with us? Can you imagine how sad He is? Can you imagine how grieved He may be? Those  of us who have had or still have children or adults live with us , whom we care for or not, we cannot imagine them just not saying Good morning, hi or hello to us when they have just seen us, or if they just leave the house like that? Tugamba era twebuuza nti, "Oyo munti ki era aliba atya? Oluusi tubayita ba Kiwagi oba ba Nnantabuulilirwa. Abo abatebuuza oba abatawuliriza!!!

I was so struck by the realisation that I was just like that kind of child or person to God, Our Father. Our Father is not only in heaven, but he is with us always. I have neglected Him so many times and planned my own ways that have led me many times to nowhere, or even to a wild goose chase! Can you imagine? Three years ago, I was taking two buses on one way to my work. However, these two had so many routes and as many buses at the same stop or stage. I saw one and I crossed the street with a green light. Soon as I crossed  the street, a bus which could have taken me on another route but the same destination passed by,  but I had a red light that stopped me from back tracking my steps. It went on for about 3 or 4 buses! Can you imagine! And I was so tired that day. Our Father, God whose love is everlasting, whose mercies are new every morning, spoke to my heart. He showed me  that was exactly how I was running my life.

Instead of neglecting God's written Word that has a plan and daily instructions for our lives, we should consult it daily to get to know what He desires for us.

We often ask why people work so hard and get so much yet they may lose everything in just one day, or a few days or even years. We often wonder why people die and leave so many things, property and wealth, yet everything is lost or destroyed in just a short time. It is because they had not asked God for the instructions of their lives.

Jesus said, "..lay your treasures in heaven where moths and rust do not destroy them, or thieves break through and steal them...For where your treasure is, there is your heart."
Matthew 6:19-21

Prayer
Father, Almighty God,
ever loving God,
Merciful God, give me the plan for my life.
As  I approach Your Throne of Mercy with boldness as you tell us,
Forgive me where I have ignored you, or not listened to you.
Nsonyiwa okuba Kiwagi, atebuuza oba atawuliriza.
Give me instructions for my life,
Daily, hourly,
Weekly, monthly, yearly.
Step by step.
Mile by mile.
Journey by journey.
Room by room, desk by desk,
drawer by drawer, task by task.
I make you the Lord of my life.
Sit on the throne of my heart that you may be my King.
Open my eyes to see your Face through the crowd of this world.
Open my ears that I may hear your Voice through the noise of this world.
In the name of Jesus.
 Amen.

"...but those who hope in/ wait on the Lord
    will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40:31

"Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in Your law.” Psalm 119:18

Song
1. Open my eyes, that I may see
Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;
Place in my hands the wonderful key
That shall unclasp and set me free.

Refrain
Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready my God, Thy will to see,
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

2. Open my ears, that I may hear
Voices of truth Thou sendest clear;
And while the wave notes fall on my ear,
Everything false will disappear.

Refrain

3. Open my mouth, and let me bear,
Gladly the warm truth everywhere;
Open my heart and let me prepare
Love with Thy children thus to share.

Our Faithful On Time God

Psalm 104:13-15

New International Version (NIV)
13 He waters the mountains from his upper chambers;
the land is satisfied by the fruit of his work.
14 He makes grass grow for the cattle,
and plants for people to cultivate—
bringing forth food from the earth:
15 wine that gladdens human hearts,
oil to make their faces shine,
and bread that sustains their hearts.

After reading Mary's testimony,  I was uplifted and remembered how God has been so faithful in my life even when I have been so unfaithful.

Today’s Truth
Philippians 4:19 (NIV) “And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.”
Friend To Friend
I grew up in Texas where we lived in what some might call a “shack” on the edge of a small town. To me, it was just home. My amazing mother often worked three jobs to make ends meet but that “meeting” did not always happen. Looking back, I can honestly say that God always provided what we needed - when we needed it. He still does...
Song:
Great is Thy faithulness, great is thy faithfulness,
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand has provided.
Great is Thy faithfulness LORD  unto me.

Orombi: the archbishop who chose not to fight
Archbishop Orombi

IN SUMMARY
After an eight-year reign, ArchBishop Luke Orombi decided to retire. His term of leadership will be one that will be remembered for his stand on gay rights, his apology to the Baganda Christians as well as his silence on political issues.
Whether clergy should or shouldn’t be involved in politics, or at least criticise it, is a matter of varying opinions. But from a leadership point of view, it reflected a failure on Bishop Orombi’s part to rally his house into unity or agreement on an issue of doctrine, a feat that could have such effects as leaving the 10-million-plus flock in the Anglican church confused as to what is the right course of direction.
President Museveni’s influence is being watched closely as a successor is sought for Bishop Orombi. The president’s game of politics has been to keep all religious leaders close – and this is the case in Islam as well. President Museveni is known not to miss Bishop’s consecrations, even if they are hundreds of miles away from Kampala, taking the opportunity to have photo moments and donate a Sports Utility Vehicle to the new Bishop.
Yes, it still is a matter of opinion, but Bishop Orombi has been marked with accusations of being too apolitical, of being too close to the president or simply turning the other way when government goes wrong. And the fact that his immediate deputy offered the best chance to compare and contrast his views, will help further embolden this as typical of his reign.
Bishop Orombi’s reign is marked with the contradiction that as he managed to foster some form of unity in and out of the church at home, he was the exact opposite on the international scene, where he also played a key role.
Having found plans to construct a building in Kampala already formulated, Bishop Orombi leaves offices having seen the building rise out of the ground; a feat that shows the Anglican Church is not being left behind by the Catholic Church, which recently opened Mapeera House, just a few metres away.
While he served as the archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Henry Luke Orombi oversaw a period during which we learned that it was possible to agree, even when disagreement was the weather condition of the day. And his shyness to politics will not do much to slur that.

Skydiver dies after both chutes fail

A veteran skydiver died in a horror accident in Australia over the weekend, when both his main and reserve parachutes failed to open after he jumped from a plane.
The accident happened Sunday afternoon in the Lockyer Valley west of Brisbane, in Queensland.
Jump organizers Ripcord Skydivers said the man, who was not named but believed to be aged in his 60s, had jumped more than 1,000 times previously.
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said he died on impact, according to The Courier-Mail.
"For whatever reason his parachute has failed to deploy and he has died at the scene," she said. Investigations were continuing.
Earlier this year, a US skydiver who had trained Navy SEALs and completed more than 8,000 jumps died near Los Angeles while attempting a dangerous maneuver during a competition.
Sean Carey, 35, landed heavily in a pond while swooping -- which involves traveling just feet above the ground at high speeds -- at the event in February.

Happy Mother's Day 2012

Happy Mother's Day to all my Sisters in the Lord, my Friends, all you women who are acknowledged, especially those who are not acknowledge.
Especially those who are unnamed
Especially those who are unknown.
Especially those who are despised.
Especially those who are never paid.
Especially those whose constant care, nurturing, security, protection, guardianship is not recognised!

Happy Mother's day to those who still have their darling husbands with them.
To the widowed Mothers who simply have memories of their loved ones, their children.
To those Single Mothers who are divorced.
To those Single Mothers who are separated.
To those Single Mothers who have never been married.
To those Mothers who have adopted children and cared for them as their own.
For those Mothers who gave birth to us amidst the uncertainity and pain.
To those Mothers who chose to embrace us as their own and nurtured us.
To those Mothers who don't know where the next meal is coming form.
To those Mothers who don't know if her children will afford school next term.
To those Mothers anywhere in the world who wake up very early, toil and strive like donkeys in any way so their children may get better lives.
To those Mothers who turn to prostitution when they can't see another way so that their children may be and become.

To all those Mothers who are sick and suffering.
To those who cant take care of their children because of different reasons.

To those Mothers who were forced in pain to have children and not on their own terms.

To all those Mothers who are carrying generations as grandmothers and great grandmothers.
We esteem Mary, Mother of Jesus, Mother exemplary, who even in her young age, as a virgin, simply agreed to God's plan for our salvation.
Kiriba kitya ekyo Malaika, kubanga nze simanyi musajja!
"My soul magnifies the Lord
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
Because he has regarded the lowliness of his handmaid;
For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed;
Because he who is mighty has done great things for me,and holy is his name;
And his mercy is from generation to generation on those who fear him.
He has shown might with his arm,He has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and has exalted the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty
.He has given help to Israel, his servant, mindful of his mercy
Even as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity."
The Magnificat, taken from Luke’s Gospel (1:46-55), is the Blessed Virgin Mary’s hymn of praise to the Lord.
To all those Mothers who have departed this world yet are still in our hearts and fond memories.
Whose earthly pictures/photos we may never have but they will laways be stamped in our hearts.
I will always remember my Dear Mother Robinah.S.B.K. whom I didn't get much the chance to show my gratitude and love.

To God be the Glory, great things he has done, by creating Mothers and the gift of Mothering.
For we would not be without them.

Ecumenical panel kicks off UN forum on indigenous issues

Several faith groups were among the sponsors of a U.N. panel session on May 7 called "Churches Disavow the Doctrine of Discovery: Calling for Poverty Alleviation and Healing," which sought to address various issues facing indigenous peoples, including education and land rights.

The discussion took place on the first day of the 11th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), meeting from May 7 to 18. The theme is the enduring impact of the "Doctrine of Discovery on native peoples and "the right to redress for past conquests."

The "Doctrine of Discovery" refers to international laws that were understood to set forth the ways in which colonial powers laid claim to newly discovered territories beginning in the early 1500s and continuing through the 1700s. (Throughout the 19th century, it was believed that the United States, specifically people of Anglo-Saxon decent, were destined to expand across the continent, in what was referred to as "Manifest Destiny.")

Cheryle Kennedy, chairwoman of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde of western Oregon, told the ecumenical panel at the United Nations Church Center that in the 1850s, native people living in the western United States signed "peace" treaties with the federal government in exchange for land. The land was to provide a safe homeland and economic opportunities.

A century later, in 1954, in an "act of termination," when the government took the land back and stripped the native people of their indigenous status, "many bad things happened, but we were not broken," she continued.

In the 1970s, the confederated tribes resolved to overturn the government's decision and by 1983 their indigenous status had been restored; in 1986, 10,000 acres had been returned. Since then, Kennedy said, they've been buying back land "acre by acre."

The 2009 meeting of the General Convention of the Episcopal Church passed a resolution repudiating the Doctrine of Discovery. The Anglican Church of Canada took a similar action in 2010, followed by the World Council of Churches in 2012.

In addition to Kennedy, the panel included Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori; Robert J. Miller, a professor at Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon; and Sarah Augustine, director of the Suriname Indigenous Health Fund and a member of the Mennonite Church.

Sarah Eagle Heart, the Episcopal Church's missioner for indigenous ministries, moderated the panel, which began with the screening of a video produced by the Episcopal Church that explores the lasting impact of the Doctrine of Discovery.

The hurt left by the doctrine on North America's native people can be seen in the form of high suicide rates, alcohol and drug abuse, and the prevalence of violence and rape. It's not easy to enter into the work of reconciliation; and it's easier for non-native people to walk away and ignore the acts of their ancestors, said Eagle Heart.

"It's much, much harder to sit together and face the pain," she said. "Healing from excruciating pain is still needed today."

Following the eviction from the Garden of Eden, the Bible is full of stories that focus on human communities and their striving to return "to a homeland that will be a source of blessing for the whole community," said Jefferts Schori.

"Through the long centuries, the prophetic understanding of that community has broadened to include all the nations of the earth. Even so, the seemingly eternal struggle between dominators and stewards continues to the present day.

"Most of the passages in the Bible that talk about land are yearning for a fertile place, where people are able to grow crops, and tend flocks, and live together in peace. The offspring of those first human beings gave rise to people who hungered for land, and many of them did a great deal of violence through the ages in order to occupy and possess it. The Christian empires of Europe were consumed with battles over land for centuries, and eventually sent military expeditions across the
Mediterranean in a quest to re-establish a Christian claim on what they called the Holy Land," she continued.

Miller, the law professor, talked briefly about international law and the Doctrine of Discovery, going back to the Crusades, when Rome and the Christian monarchies of Europe set out to dominate the world and subjugate and enslave all non-Christian people.

In 1436, Pope Eugene IV issued a papal bull giving control and sovereignty of the Canary Islands to Portugal, rather than Spain, which then sent Portugal on the path to colonization down the western coast of Africa. Spain, feeling left out, headed west. In 1493, Pope Alexander V issued four papal bulls that, in effect, divided the world in half; splitting it between Spain and Portugal, said Miller.

"When the Europeans showed up, native people lost title to their land," he said.

Other European nations followed, staking claim to territories by planting flags and crosses, but it wasn't until 1823, with Johnson v. McIntosh, that the United States defined the Doctrine of Discovery, as "discovery" and "conquest," limiting tribal land and sovereignty rights. The court case, which involved a land dispute between two white men in Indiana, became the international model, added Miller.

Even today, said Augustine, indigenous people are being "colonized." Augustine works with indigenous people in Suriname who have been displaced and made sick by the growth of the mining industry in that small South American country, which until 1975 belonged to the Netherlands.

"The people I help need help every day," said Augustine, urging those present to encourage aid to indigenous people through the support of grassroots movements. She also urged support for nations such as Suriname and the United States to adopt the U.N. rights of indigenous people into their constitutions.

The panel was co-sponsored by the Episcopal Church, the Anglican Communion, the World Council of Churches, the Mennonite Central Committee, the World Federation of Methodist and Uniting Church Women, The Grail (an international women's movement), the Gray Panthers, U.F.E.R. - International Movement for Fraternal Union among Races and Peoples, Suriname Indigenous Health Fund, the NGO Committee on the U.N. International Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples, the Salvation Army, the World Student Christian Federation, and Office of the Chaplain of the Church Center for the United Nations.
